Older brother and Younger brother are locked in a split-second, lightning-fast race against each other; they’ve been at it since the beginning of time. Through the sky they soar at a quickening pace; piercing cumulus humilis clouds, zipping by F-22 Raptors, slicing through driblets of rain and leaving flocks of broad-winged hawks in their wake.
Older brother Light has always been the fastest; everyone knows this to be true. He never asked for such a gift of excellence, but he embraces it and never stops going. Light cuts through the shower of rain to form a beautiful rainbow array of colors. As he flies by, a mother and father are having a picnic with their baby boy; they all smile at the lovely rainbow and the beautiful spectacle that is Light.
Younger brother Sound is fast too, but not fast enough. He’s faster than everything else there ever is and ever was. But when it comes to his brother, there is no second place, just dead last. Sound trails Light as he catches up on the remaining F-22 as he lets out a loud rumbling bellow of a WHHHIIIIIRRRRRRR that does nothing but bother the family having a picnic below. The baby wakes to the loud awful noise and Sound makes him wail a loud and angry cry. Sound hates to be such a bother, but he tries to forget about it all and catch up to that speedy brother of his.
Higher and higher they soar, up towards the heavens. Light races up, up, up past the Earth’s atmosphere to the stars. Sound follows from afar, seeing a speck of Light in the distance. He passes through the clouds, getting smaller and smaller as he rises, barely getting past the Earth. It’s a strange moment for Sound; it’s as if he no longer exists. He witnesses Light travel to the Sun. Light pauses and gives a piece of himself to the Sun, who smiles and nods in gratitude. Sound has turned to frozen silence at the edge of space, watching and wishing that he could present the Sun with a gift himself.
Light zooms past Sound back towards the Earth. Silence grows back into Sound as he once again tails his older brother back to the realm of man. Men and women walk leisurely down sidewalks as clouds part to reveal bursts of Light, warming their faces on this breezy summer afternoon. A cacophony of jingles from wind chimes, barking dogs, roaring car engines with honking horns and ice cream truck songs erupt as Sound breathes a breath of fresh air back into existence. Endless noise is all that Sound can provide; it’s what he is after all. But all the noise that Sound seems to be bringing these days is nothing but nuisances.
Light shines through the ocean through a tiny hole in an abandoned rig off of the coast. Fish of all shades and hues swim nearby and dance in the fractured Light. Sound makes a muffled TUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRNKKKKKKKK under the sea as the old rig’s anchor lets loose and crashes to the ocean floor, scaring all of the colorful fish away. Sound cries and lets out a whimpering KEEEEEERRRRUNK UNK UNK unk as a speed boat’s engine gives out and dies at the water’s surface. He can’t seem to do anything good like his brother; he just makes a bunch of loud, obnoxious noise that upsets everyone within earshot.
Light is on the beach, shining on bronze bodies as they lay lifeless on the sand dozing off to an afternoon slumber. A small boy is piling mounds of sand on top of one another, looking off to the sea. As he makes this sand castle of sorts, a tiny dachshund prances down the beach towards the unknowing boy. Suddenly Sound allows the dog to announce himself with an excited YIP! YIP! The small boy turns around and is startled by the frantic little dog. Sound expects the worst, that he’ll make this small boy scream and cry, being a bothersome noise yet again. But to Sound’s surprise and delight, the small boy hugs the tiny dog. The small boy lets out a loud and joyful giggle as the dog licks his face lovingly.
The clouds part and a ray of Light glistens like a diamond across the ocean in the distance. Sound tries to reach for it as the waves SPLISH and SPLASH.
The race continues.
